BESS OF HARDWICK and HARDWICK HALL Dr Gillian White Friday 26 October 2018

Bess was a woman well before her time. She was married 4 times, was an accomplished needle woman, a noblewoman and an innovative builder. When she died at age 81 she was the second richest person in England, second only to Queen Elizabeth 1 She was at one time the keeper of Mary Queen of Scots, and they worked together on the 400 year old Oxburgh Hangings.

Completed in 1599, Hardwick Hall was an extraordinary achievement and one of the great houses of the Elizabethan age. Like many other high-status Elizabethan houses it had huge windows – giving rise to the saying ‘Hardwick Hall, more glass than wall’. It also developed some of the innovative features first seen in Hardwick Old Hall.

Our lecturer for the day is Gillian White. She specialises in the visual arts of the late medieval and sixteenth century England. She worked for the National Trust as Curator of Hardwick Hall and wrote about it for her PhD.
